WMV Musician Workshop #22: Building/Improving Your Home Studio

January 8, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Led by Thomas Riddle

Wisconsin Music Ventures hosts monthly musician workshops via Zoom that touch on important topics for musicians in the industry.

We’ve all got that list of “If only”.

If only I had a better space.

If only I had a better mic.

If only I had some vintage analogue gear.

If only I knew more than 5 chords. (Really, just me?)

But “If Only” doesn’t get it done. It’s a distraction from the time and tools you have when what you really need is a plan.

Setting attainable goals is the name of the game, and having the right plan for your project and your space can keep you focused on your creative process. Especially if your space is nonoptimal, and your time constraints are high! With near limitless options in the digital realm, better access to gear than ever before, and questionable YouTube advice, it’s hard to cut through the hype and get usable answers.

We’ll cover everything from planning your sonic palette, picking the right mic for the job, treating your space, choosing the outboard gear you REALLY need (Or digital variant), plugins and DAWS, monitors vs headphones, and setting up templates and your physical workspace to make the most out of your time in studio.

Interactivity is encouraged so we can spend the time solving your REAL-WORLD problems and get you back to making the best music of your life.

“I started Stories Studio because I’ve always wanted more out of my own sessions. More feedback, more direction, and overall more interest in my project and my goals. In creating my own space I’ve taken control of the unknown, and given myself and my clients a space where the whole team is committed, from start to finish.”

A 30-year veteran of the music industry, Tom has worn many hats. Vocalist, teacher, engineer, and producer, it all happens under one roof at Stories Studio MKE. Having started his recording journey in a hot Florida garage with a 4 track, 2 tapes, and a dream, he’s become adept at maximizing nonoptimal recording spaces for maximum results.

Recently back from working side by side with Bob Marlette (Ozzy, Shinedown) and Sahaj Ticotin (Ra, Nothing More, Starset) at Sweetwater Studios.
