RMCAD Virtual Music Production Workshop: Mixing Stems

April 5, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Learn from one of our RMCAD experts during this free creative workshop!

RMCAD’s Virtual Faculty Workshop shows artists just like you the fun, simple ways of making creative content using various technologies.

Join Dr. Sean Peuquet, Chair of the Music Production Department at RMCAD, on Tuesday, April 5 for a workshop on the basic tools, techniques, and workflows involved in mixing music.

After producing a track, with all the sounds designed and arranged from start to finish, the next step is post-production. Mixing is an integral first step in post-production, and starts with developing an understanding of audio stems, or musical layers of sound within a musical arrangement.

Once we learn to identify, prepare, export, and move track stems between different Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), we can shift into mixing as a separate, distinct phase of music production. With organization and efficiency always top-of-mind, there will be plenty of tips and tricks for how to approach mixing, choose the right tools for the job, and learn to trust your ears and avoid pitfalls like endless tweaking. In surveying the basic tools of mixing — gain, panning, EQ, and dynamics processing — we’ll uncover the components of creating a solid mix.

Dr. P will also describe and provide insight into the RMCAD BFA degree in Music Production, highlighting areas of focus and how the program prepares you for a career in Music, Music Technology, and the Audio Recording + Media Production Industries.
