The Pro Tools Fundamentals 2 course provides the training required to prepare for the certification exam: Avid Certified User, Pro Tools.

Welcome to Pro Tools Fundamentals Part 2 at Women’s Audio Mission!

This course is designed for:

  • Musicians
  • Audio Engineers
  • Sound Editors for Film or Television

Part 2 is a continuation from our Pro Tools Fundamentals Part 1 course.*

The Pro Tools Fundamentals 2 course expands upon the Pro Tools Fundamentals 1 course.

Building on the skills learned in Pro Tools Part 1, students will further develop their skills in editing voice and music, use of plugin processing including compression, EQ, delay and reverb for mixing. Students will have additional hands-on practice working with virtual instruments, Elastic Audio, using automation, clip gain, submixes and groups to simplify a final mix.

Together with the first course in the series, Pro Tools Fundamentals Part 1, this course provides the training required as exam preparation to become an Avid Certified User, Pro Tools .

Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge of Avid Pro Tools software: edit tools and edit modes, edit window parts and mix window parts as covered in Pro Tools Fundamentals Part 1. Additional Part 1 pre-requisite details included below.
  • Working knowledge of Windows or Macintosh operating systems
  • Recommended: Basic audio recording and DAW knowledge, such as a familiarity with microphones, understanding of basic audio and MIDI recording techniques, knowledge of basic multi-track mixing concepts (such as setting levels and panning), and familiarity with digital audio equipment such as MIDI controllers and audio interfaces.

…AND Pro Tools Fundamentals Part 1 (or equivalent):

  • The Pro Tools session file structure
  • Opening, navigating, and saving Pro Tools sessions
  • Creating new tracks in Pro Tools
  • Assigning Inputs and Outputs in the Pro Tools Mix and Edit windows
  • Using Mix window controls such as Volume, Mute, Solo, and Pan
  • Using Edit tools such as the Zoomer, Trim, Selector, and Grabber tools
  • Using Slip, Shuffle, Spot, and Grid Edit modes

What You Will Come Away With:

Upon completion of this course, students will have an understanding of the basic features of Pro Tools, and students will be able to:

  • Set up a Pro Tools system with external audio interface
  • Create and utilize a video track in Pro Tools
  • Import session data and understand file management
  • Create and record MIDI files to instrument tracks using virtual instruments
  • Learn advanced editing techniques for voice and music files
  • Utilize clip gain and mix automation
  • Set customized fade settings
  • Employ plugin processing on tracks including compression, EQ, delay, and reverb
  • Modify and automate plugin processing settings

This course follows the curriculum from PT 12.8 / PT101

Saturday: 11/5 – Sunday: 11/6

Location: WAM’s Oakland learning lab, “WAMO”, located at 1900 Fruitvale Ave, Unit 3A, 3rd floor, Oakland, CA

About the Instructor:

Mary Ann Zahorsky is an engineer/producer with over 25 years of experience in the recording industry. She has worked on projects ranging from Howard Wiley’s 2nd Line, Denise Perrier, Whitney Houston, and MC Hammer, to soundtracks for independent films and TV post work on ad campaigns such as Levi’s and Taco Bell. Within the Recording Academy leadership, Mary Ann served on the National Board of Trustees and led the San Francisco Board as Chapter President. As an educator, Mary Ann has taught studio recording, production, entertainment business, and audio post production atat San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Expression College and at San Francisco State University. She especially enjoys working with emerging artists and engineers and the energy they bring to the evolving field of music. Mary Ann also grew up playing classical violin and for many years has participated in Traditional Mexican Son and classical African music ensembles. She holds a BA Music from University of California, Berkeley, and a Masters in Education from University of San Francisco.
