She specializes in unique arrangements of jazz standards and pop songs. Her career focus has been on teaching and performing American jazz and accompanying vocalists\, including herself. \nFrom her appearance with the Phil Mattson Singers at Carnegie Hall to a five-month jazz duo residency in China\, Kristin’s performance career has been rich and varied. In Milwaukee\, Chicago\, Minneapolis/St. Paul\, Key Largo\, Nashville\, and Urbana\, IL\, her freelance work as a pianist has included jazz festivals\, background music\, a Dixieland band\, big bands\, small jazz groups\, church work\, weddings\, and an abundance of solo gigs. As a vocalist\, Kristin sang with the Phil Mattson Singers for two years\, started her own vocal jazz group in the Chicago area\, and is called upon to accompany the best vocalists in her place of residence. \nKristin has considerable academic training and teaching experience. Over the last four years\, she held various teaching positions at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School\, Milwaukee High School of the Arts (of which she is an alumnus)\, and Cardinal Stritch University. She graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance (Voice) from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 2018\, where she held a coveted Teaching Assistantship. Her doctoral research is titled The Advantages and Challenges of the Female Self-Accompanied Jazz Vocalist. \nPrior to starting her D.M.A.\, Kristin was a full-time faculty member for eight years at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul\, MN. Her robust skill set allowed her to teach a variety of courses and direct a jazz combo. She earned her Master of Music in Jazz Studies and Studio Music (Piano) from Roosevelt University in 2005 and her Bachelor of Arts (Jazz Studies Emphasis–Piano) in 2000 from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. \nPresently\, Kristin performs and teaches in the Chicagoland and Milwaukee areas. SUMMARY:WMV Musician Workshop #22: Building/Improving Your Home Studio
DESCRIPTION:Led by Thomas Riddle\n\n\nWisconsin Music Ventures hosts monthly musician workshops via Zoom that touch on important topics for musicians in the industry. \nWe’ve all got that list of “If only”. \nIf only I had a better space. \nIf only I had a better mic. \nIf only I had some vintage analogue gear. \nIf only I knew more than 5 chords. (Really\, just me?) \nBut “If Only” doesn’t get it done. It’s a distraction from the time and tools you have when what you really need is a plan. \nSetting attainable goals is the name of the game\, and having the right plan for your project and your space can keep you focused on your creative process. Especially if your space is nonoptimal\, and your time constraints are high! With near limitless options in the digital realm\, better access to gear than ever before\, and questionable YouTube advice\, it’s hard to cut through the hype and get usable answers. \nWe’ll cover everything from planning your sonic palette\, picking the right mic for the job\, treating your space\, choosing the outboard gear you REALLY need (Or digital variant)\, plugins and DAWS\, monitors vs headphones\, and setting up templates and your physical workspace to make the most out of your time in studio. \nInteractivity is encouraged so we can spend the time solving your REAL-WORLD problems and get you back to making the best music of your life. \n“I started Stories Studio because I’ve always wanted more out of my own sessions. More feedback\, more direction\, and overall more interest in my project and my goals. In creating my own space I’ve taken control of the unknown\, and given myself and my clients a space where the whole team is committed\, from start to finish.” \nA 30-year veteran of the music industry\, Tom has worn many hats. Vocalist\, teacher\, engineer\, and producer\, it all happens under one roof at Stories Studio MKE. Having started his recording journey in a hot Florida garage with a 4 track\, 2 tapes\, and a dream\, he’s become adept at maximizing nonoptimal recording spaces for maximum results. \nRecently back from working side by side with Bob Marlette (Ozzy\, Shinedown) and Sahaj Ticotin (Ra\, Nothing More\, Starset) at Sweetwater Studios.
