SUMMARY:IASPM Research Seminar February 2022
DESCRIPTION:Memory and Machines: Perspectives on Narratives and Aesthetics in Popular Music\n\n\nThis is the monthly research seminar of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). This month the event is being curated by the DACH Branch of IASPM and will have two presentations. \n \nConstructing and Re-Structuring Groove and Aesthetics – Drum Machines as Narrative Agents in Popular Music \nRobert Michler\, Graduate School of the Arts and Humanities\, Bern University\, Switzerland \nDrum machines as analogue and digital rhythmical devices have set a new approach of accuracy since the 1980s. Using a rhythmical grid and introducing a new set of aesthetics with their electronic beats\, they have laid the foundation for a paradigm shift in pop and rock music regarding groove\, which was later to be completed by the introduction of quantisation in digital music software\, manifesting the fixed rhythmic grid as the most axiomatic element of the groove. The origin of these new music technologies\, which I refer to as machine-based-groove\, can be traced back to the 1970s and more rudimentary devices\, especially preset-based drum machines\, which were used in subcultural genres until innovative\, programmable drum machines with the ability to create custom grooves entered the mainstream of pop. Focusing on drum machines’ diverse characteristics\, this presentation addresses the extent to which their functions\, sounds and characteristics can be perceived as narratives\, through offering re- and constructed grooves within networks of musicians and producers. On the basis of selected successful pop songs\, the presentation explores how specific drum machine devices from the 1980s such as the Roland TR-808\, Linn-Drum\, and Oberheim DMX have functioned as role models for the new technology\, and how their sounds and characteristics became essential to the sound of the decade. In addition\, looking back at drum machines of the 1970s\, the presentation foregrounds their important overlooked aspects as narrative agents. In doing so\, the presentation shows how rhythmic music technology manifests artists’ intentions\, identities\, and sonic fictions\, and conveys cultural backgrounds through machine-based groove. This opens up the discussion of how drum machines can offer new perspectives on music technology\, narrative\, aesthetics\, cultural practices\, and networks. \n \nRemembering National Socialism: Counter-Narratives in German Hip-Hop \nThomas Sebastian Köhn\, Institute of Fine Arts\, Music and Education\, Leuphana University Lüneburg\, Germany \nThe Berlin-based rapper Ben Salomo and the Leipzig-based rapper Reimteufel have produced and disseminated hip-hop tracks that engage with family memories and collective memories of the Holocaust and World War II. These memories are interwoven with various historical\, political\, and religious discourses\, referring to current processes of marginalization\, to Jewishness\, and memory sites. Focusing on the tracks ”Stolpersteine” (stumbling stones)\, released in 2012 by Reimteufel\, and on the tracks “Identität” (identity) and “Deduschka” (grandfather) released in 2016 and 2020 by Ben Salomo\, the presentation explores how the tracks employ counter-narratives (Köhn 2021) that not only abandon victim-centered perspectives but also question and criticize institutionalized memory culture. Drawing on a combination of music analysis (Moore 2012\, von Appen/Doehring 2014\, Steinbrecher 2016)\, video analysis (Flick 2011\, Erll 2014) and ethnography (Pink 2015\, Schoop 2021)\, this presentation examines how counter-narratives are negotiated in the hip hop tracks and the accompanying music videos through the aesthetics of lyrics and flow (Kautny 2009) in combination with sampling (Stratton 2016) and material culture (Golańska 2020). Bringing popular music studies and cultural memory studies into dialogue\, the presentation demonstrates how hip-hop serves as a medium for establishing an activist\, anti-racist\, and reflective post-Holocaust perspective in a musical memory practice. \n \nRobert Michler studied jazz-drums performance\, pedagogy in music\, and musicology. He is currently a doctoral researcher at the Graduate School of the Arts and Humanities at Bern University\, Switzerland. His dissertation focuses on the impact of drum machines and quantisation between 1980 and 1995\, investigating new approaches to aesthetics and groove in pop-and rock-music productions. In addition\, he is active as a producer for music and film\, and develops educational materials for the department for University Didactics and E-learning at Bern University of Applied Sciences. \nThomas Sebastian Köhn is a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Fine Arts\, Music\, and Education at Leuphana University Lüneburg\, Germany. Since 2019\, he has conducted research on memories of the Holocaust and World War II in contemporary German-language hip-hop and in auditory media in World War II related exhibitions. In his research\, he combines approaches from music and media analysis\, ethnomusicology\, and soundscape analysis. His research interests include the intersections between musicology\, sound studies\, and cultural memory studies.

SUMMARY:Mechanics of Music Management: Making Money From Music Copyright In 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Mechanics Of Music Management’ is a training programme from MMF delivered by CMU Insights and led by Chris Cooke and Marcus O’Dair.\n\n\nThe Mechanics Of Music Management’ is a training programme from MMF delivered by CMU Insights and led by Chris Cooke and Marcus O’Dair. A series of six webinars exploring best practice and current trends in artist management\, together these sessions provide a comprehensive guide to artist revenue streams and business models\, music rights and record deals\, fanbase building and direct-to-fan relationships\, and explain where the manager fits in with each of these strands of the business. \nMAKING MONEY FROM MUSIC COPYRIGHT IN 2022 \nHow to make sure your artists aren’t missing out on royalties \nWhenever artists write songs or record tracks they create copyrights. And those copyrights can generate revenue. We provide a user-friendly guide to copyright: what it is\, how it works\, how it makes money and how managers can ensure their clients properly manage\, monetise and enforce their rights. We’ll also explain what PRS\, PPL and MCPS do – and why getting copyright data right can be the difference between being paid and seeing nothing from your plays\, syncs and streams. \nQuestions answered include: \n– What kind of creativity does copyright protect? \n– What kind of control does copyright provide? \n– Who owns your artist’s copyrights? \n– How does copyright make money? \n– What is stopping your artist’s getting paid? \n– Where do PRS\, MCPS and PPL fit in? \nFull price for each individual webinar is £66+VAT. Members get 50% discount and sister organisations gets 25% discount. Please e-mail manasvi@themmf.net for info and discount codes. Links will be sent out on the day of the training.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to the Reaper DAW\, Presented by Jam Phelps – Denk Studios
DESCRIPTION:We will learn how to use Reaper from opening the program to completing mix projects\, recording sessions\, and producing with MIDI.\n\n\nPresented by \nJam Phelps\, of Denk Studios\, \nand \nThe Pacific Northwest Section of the Audio Engineering Society \n\n\nNote that this meeting starts at 6:00pm Pacific Standard Time\, which is UTC -8. There are many countries in the world where that is the middle of normal sleep time\, so if you intend to sleep normally that day you may want to watch the video when it comes out rather than signing up here. \nThat said\, it’s free to sign up\, so do whatever makes you happy. \n \n\n\nPresentation Description: \nReaper is a Digital Audio Workstation program that is gaining popularity. It is full-functioned\, and the cost to license it for use is both flexible and reasonable. There is a reasonable trial mode\, with the program fully functional\, so you can actually get work done with it. \nIn this meeting\, you will learn how to use Reaper from opening the program to completing mix projects\, recording sessions\, and producing with MIDI. We will also focus on Reaper’s automation features. \n You will learn the basic functionality of Reaper for recording\, adding plug-ins and virtual instruments\, rendering multi tracks and finished projects\, and other mixing features. \nThis is for folks with some DAW knowledge and a basic understanding of audio. \nAngela Dane of the AESPNW Section Committee will moderate the meeting. \nFeel free to send any questions in beforehand; you may also send stems to work with live to: denkstudioswgr (at) gmail \nAdditional information can be found at \nPacific Northwest Section of the Audio Engineering Society Website. \nDenk Studios Website \nDenk Studios on Youtube \nReaper Website \nTHIS EVENT IS FREE\, OPEN TO ALL\, AND AES MEMBERSHIP IS NOT REQUIRED \n\n\n\nAbout The Presenter\nJam Phelps is a Mix Engineer\, Music Producer and owner of Denk Studios in Durham\, North Carolina. Her studio is focused on uplifting marginalized voices in music such as women and LGBTQ+ folks. \n She has been a musician for 28 years and loves crafting unique productions and imaginative mixes in a safe environment where creativity thrives. \nJam has been featured on Soundgirls.org\, Stories in Sound\, The Music Executive podcast (link is to Amazon Music\, log-in required)\, and currently is a Waves Audio collaborating artist for Gear Fanatix. \n\n\nPNW AES Zoom Meetings \nWe started holding our meetings via Zoom beginning with the April 2020 meeting. Zoom has dramatically increased our reach\, well beyond our Section’s geographic area. Since doing this\, we’ve regularly had attendees from: \n-most Provinces in Canada; \n– most countries in: \n–Europe\, \n–Central and South America; \n-Japan\, \n-India\, \n-Indonesia\, \n-Malaysia\, \n-Australia\, \n-and more. It’s been unbelievable how many cool audio people we’ve met. \nZoom gives the ability to record videos of our meetings\, and those recordings are individually posted in our past meetings Archive. For now\, the collected videos from our Zoom meetings can be found (mostly) at Dan Mortensen’s DansoundSeattle YouTube channel. \nWe use EventBrite to manage our free tickets to meetings. You are in the right place to RSVP for your ticket for this event. \nThe Zoom URL will be sent in three reminders: two days\, the morning of\, and an hour or two before the event starts. \nWhen you register at EventBrite and when you enter the Zoom meeting\, please use your real first and last names so we can get to know each other. You do NOT need to create an EventBrite account to register. \n\n\nPlease Note\nIn order to maintain decorum and avoid interruptions\, even unintended ones\, we have established a few ground rules for meeting attendees: \n1. We want to see your full name on display in Zoom at the meeting. \n2. The presenter(s) will determine if they can accept questions during the presentation\, or wait until specific Q&A times\, and that will be announced at the beginning of the meeting. (We often use the “chat” feature to allow attendees to ask questions when they think of them\, with moderators passing them on to the presenter at the appropriate time.) \n3. Please mute your microphone when not talking (a moderator may mute you if you haven’t muted yourself; if they do\, Zoom won’t let you un-mute until a moderator clears you again.) \n4. Based on our experience with no-shows\, we reserve the right to issue more tickets than available slots. We don’t want to turn people away based on inaccurate estimates of attendance\, but we do have budgetary limits to the number of slots we can make available. If we reach capacity before you log in\, we regret that we may have no way to expand capacity at the last minute. \n5. Some presenters are distracted when confronted by a sea of video faces or other images\, so for some meetings we may ask that you turn your camera/images off during the presentation. If you forget\, one of our moderators may do it for you\, and you may or may not get a private chat note informing you. \n6. During the meeting\, there is the matter of your camera. We’re going to leave that up to the presenter; whether they want to see their audience while they present or not. If they want to see who they’re talking to\, then you can leave your camera live or not\, as you prefer\, however if the presenter doesn’t want to see the audience\, then we’ll ask you to turn your video off. \n7. Moderators have the ability to globally turn everyone’s video off\, however turning it back on is troublesome; we are forced to turn cameras back on manually\, one by one. There is no way for you to override that. You’ll need your camera live later in the meeting for the self-introductions. \n8. Best is that if we ask for cameras to be on or off\, that you do this individually on your own. \n9. It would be good if you watched the chat stream during the meeting. Not only is it a way to submit questions to the presenters\, but it’s also a way for others to contact you personally. You have the option there to direct your comment to anyone who is part of the meeting as well as to one person in particular. \nFinally\, in the rare instance of behavior by an attendee that moderators believe is disruptive\, we reserve the right to immediately eject such attendees.
