DESCRIPTION:Learn audio production and basic recording techniques used in recording everything from podcasts to music.\n\n\nLevel up your skills in audio with WAM virtually!  \nClasses take place on the following 8 Mondays: \n2/7\, 2/14\, 2/21\, 2/28\, 3/7\, 3/14\, 3/21\, 3/28 \n6:30pm-9:00pm PST each day \nIn this 8-class series you will: \n\nGain an understanding of the physics and science behind sound\nLearn basic recording techniques\, and about signal flow and the recording chain\nLearn how microphones work and basic microphone selection and placement\nLearn the basics of digital audio and recording with digital audio workstations like Pro Tools\nLearn how to solder and make your own cables!\n\nThis is a foundational level course that provides the necessary skills for basic recording\, production\, and digital technologies. Classes include a combination of lecture and hands-on learning. We recommend taking Level 1 as a prerequisite to all other WAM classes.  \nLocation: Online via zoom. Please download the zoom app prior to class.  \nSuggested technical requirements: computer\, internet access\, audio interface\, microphone\, and headphones. As a live sound engineer\, she has worked with Shawn Colvin\, Joan Baez\, Herb Alpert and Lani Hall\, Odetta\, Dar Williams\, Jonatha Brooke\, Peter and Paul of Peter\, Paul and Mary\, Don McLean\, Joan Armatrading\, Buffy Sainte-Marie\, Holly Near\, and Jane Siberry. \nShe teaches Music Production\, Mixing\, Mastering and Recording\, Film Scoring\, and Audio For Visual Media at the SFJAZZ Digital Lab. \nHeidi is also a professional French Hornist who has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Il Teatro dell’Opera di Roma\, in Rome\, Italy; the JazzUp Festival in Viterbo\, Italy; and the SFJAZZ Monday Night Band\, the Sacramento Philharmonic\, Opera and Ballet\, Silicon Valley Symphony\, North State Symphony\, and Santa Rosa Symphony in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has performed and given master classes in Italy\, Thailand\, Vietnam\, Israel\, Turkey\, and Guatemala. \n———– \nWomen’s Audio Mission focuses on increasing the gender balance in audio production and technology sectors since less than 5% of the population employed in these sectors are women. In addition to reporting and producing\, Shia has taught radio to young people for WNYC’s Radio Rookies\, for UNICEF in Haiti\, and at the college level both at Mills College in Oakland and at Brooklyn College in New York City. She has produced podcasts for UNICEF and has advised other podcasts on both technical aspects and content. Shia recently joined KALW as a news editor. SUMMARY:Online workshop Wavetable Synthesis I
DESCRIPTION:This workshop gives a practical\, in depth and hands on training to design\, create and develop your own sounds using wavetable synthesis\n\n\nProgram: \n———— \nSince it’s first introduction in the beginning of the 80’ies wavetable synthesis offered a whole new pallette of soundshaping possibilities. Being completely digitally based\, wavetable synthesis unlocked a new era of what would later become virtual synths and computer based DAWs. Since it’s initial introduction to a broader audience\, wavetable synthesis has undergone a tremendous evolution. It is an evolution that is marked by a gradual shift from hardware synths suchs as the legendary PPG Wave 2 series\, Waldorf’s Wave or Blofeld series to recent powerhouse software wavetable synths such as Xfer Serum\, Arturia’s Pigments or Vital Audio’s Vital.  \nAt the core level\, the basic principles of wavetable synthesis are fairly easy to understand. But beyond this it is not straightforward to systematically grasp and use the enormous potential of wavetable synthesis and build your own sonic palette using this unique sound sculpting method.  \n \nThe workshop “Wave Table Synthesis I” gives a practical\, condensed and hands on answer to this question. In this 2 day workshop you’ll be taught a systematic method and technique how to design your own sounds using wavetable synthesis.  \nThe workshop is intended for musicians\, music producers\, composers\, sound designers or artistic creative interested minds. No previous knowledge required. \nThis workshop is organized into two sessions: \nSession 1: 4 hours on day 1 (26/03) \nIn this first session you learn to get acquainted with the basic principles of wavetable synthesis\, relevant fundamental general principles of sound synthesis and the building blocks and functionality of a typical wavetable synth.  \nIn this  session we’ll also be building a whole range of practical examples. \nConcrete program: \n-Fundamental of wavetable synthesis \n—working with wavetable editor \n–working with modulators \n–working with advances filter techniques \n \n-Practical synthesis of bowed string sound \n-Practical synthesis of plucked string sound \n-Practical synthesis of brass sounds \n-Practical synthesis of woodwind sounds \n-Practical synthesis of bass sounds \n-Practical synthesis of tonal percussive instruments \n \nSession 2: 4 hours on day 2 (27/02) \nFor the second day of the workshop you’ll first further refine your knowledge of the workings and principles of wavetable synthesis using hands on examples and patches. Hereby we’ll have a second in depth session on the nuts and bolts of wavetable synthesis and. To end this session you’ll apply this knowledge to synthesize various additional instrument types. \nConcrete program: \n-Fundamental of wavetable synthesis part 2 \n—working with advanced modulation techniques \n—working with advanced envelopes \n—adding effects \n—velocity scaling \n—keyboard scaling \n-Practical synthesis of drum and non tonal percussion sounds \n-Practical synthesis of pad sounds \n-Practical synthesis of cinematic sounds and drone sound \n-Practical synthesis of keyboard sounds \n-Practical synthesis of lead sounds \n-Practical synthesis of vocal sounds \n-Practical synthesis of special effects \n \nDepending on request of the participants synthesis of additional instruments or sounds can be handled as well or focus can be directed to one or more specific topics. \n \nRequirements: \n——————- \nLaptop and an internet connection. This workshop does can be followed entirely with free Vital plugin from Vital Audio (https://vital.audio/). The workshop does not require any knowledge or previous experience with wavetable synthesis or sound synthesis in general. He holds a Phd in pure mathematics from Ghent University (BE) as well as a masters degree in Music Composition at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent (BE). \nIn his work Valery mainly focuses on he interaction between electronic music production\, data science and theoretical physics. His latest album entitled Mikromedas AdS/CFT 001 was received worldwide with critical acclaim in over 28 countries.
